In the summer of 1976, a quiet protest shimmered into being. When Teri Warren was denied service in drag at a restaurant in Fire Island Pines (a community known then for its more reserved affluence), her friends in neighboring Cherry Grove responded with grace, glamor, and a bit of cheeky rebellion.

Led by Thom Hansen (aka Panzi), Cherry Grove’s reigning Homecoming Queen, a ferry full of queens crossed the harbor on July 4th in full regalia. As the boat glided into the Pines, confusion gave way to applause. What began as protest became pageant. That first Invasion was both playful and pointed, a statement against exclusion and a radiant declaration of presence.

It’s been happening ever since.

The Fire Island Invasion has blossomed into a five-day celebration of identity, resilience, and sheer fabulousness. From July 2nd through July 6th, the island transforms into a tapestry of sequins, soundtracks, and shared joy.

The Invasion Day: Friday, July 4

At the iconic Ice Palace Bar in Cherry Grove, drag queens gather in full finery. After a festive promenade through the town, they board a ferry bound for the Pines. When they land, thousands line the harbor to cheer, toast, and bask in the spectacle of queerness celebrated in full daylight.

Parties, DJs, and More

Sip beneath string lights at Low Tea at the Blue Whale, dance past midnight at The Pavilion, and get playful at the Underwear and Jockstrap parties that have become signature rites of passage for Fire Island newcomers and veterans alike.
